This week Last Call with BrewDad we got an extremely awesome new brewer from Hilliard’s Beer in Seattle. Todd Garrett decided to put down the brewers paddle long enough to answer the questions we all need answers to.
71. What was your first beer you ever drank?
– Sheesh, I think it was Coors Light actually. I had 2 and was loopy.
82. What was your first Craft Beer you ever had and what did you think?
– Mac n Jacks African Amber. I had just passed a big final at college and decided to celebrate with “fancy dark beer”
3. How did you get start in brewing? Homebrewer? Etc??? What was the first batch you ever made?
– A previous coworker introduced me to home brewing about 8 years ago and I thought it was amazing. We had a little club of people from work and even brewed beer for our company holiday parties a couple years in a row. The first batch was a dark holiday ale with cinnamon sticks, clove, and orange zest.
4-1. What is your favorite beer you have ever made? And why?
– It has to be the Chrome Satan (our California Common Ale) because it is such a simple beer that has a great flavor profile, great name, and is a style that not a ton of other people are brewing right now.
5c. If you had to live for the rest of your life with only drinking one beer and not one of your own. Who and what beer/brewery?
– Wow, that would be an awful life to live. The best part of beer is the endless possibilities and choices. I think I would switch to liquor if that was the case.
6d-1. What is your favorite beer style?
– My favorite is definitely Saison. It is such a loose style that, if done right, can be so interesting and complex without the addition of spices or fruit.
67. If you could create a whole new style of beer what would it be?
– I like sticking to traditional styles, but we are working on a lot of interesting barrel-aged projects with Chardonnay barrels, Sherry barrels and a couple bourbon barrels.
998. Favorite sport and team?
– Seahawk Football. Nothing better to get excited about and drink good beer to.
9. What is your ultimate session beer?
– Has to be our Hilliard’s Blonde in the can. 4.9% ABV and a nice malty, almost nutty, flavor. Goes down so smooth…definitely a BFD (beer for drinkin’)
A) What music do love to listen to while brewing?
– Something funky with a full horn section. Love Antibalas and the Budos Band…anything from Daptone Records. I also dig me some Classic Rock and Hip Hop.
420. What is the craziest ingredient you have added while brewing?
– I like to make beers that I can drink a lot of, so I can’t say that I’ve added anything too crazy. Although, the number of this question may or may not be related to something we are brainstorming about…
24. Favorite hop(s)
– Golding. Such a versatile hop with a great balance of bitterness and aroma.
13 What is your go to liquor?
– Brown liquor. Or a nice tequila.
77. Favorite Movie(s)
– Hmmm, probably Anchorman. I even dressed up as Ron Burgundy one halloween.
15. What is your favorite movie Quote?
– “I’m trapped in a glass case of emotion!”
0. Are you on twitter (@Twitter name) what is your favorite twitter #hashtag?
– @Hilliardsbeer #alwaysbecanning
17. Morning person or Night person?
– Night person who wishes he was a morning person?
44. What is your favorite Hot sauce?
– Tapatio
17. If you could ask me BrewDad one question what would it be?
– Where did you learn to count? (Answer – Cottonwood Height Elementary School)
