Silver City SBW7From Silver City Brewery: The Seattle Beer Week organizers reached out to Silver City Brewery and asked them to brew the “Official Seattle Beer Week Beer of 2015”. But why select Silver City, a brewery outside Seattle?

Short answer…
The Seattle Beer Collective wanted a brewery that “was known for brewing great lagers” as they put it, and to brew a “highly sessionable” traditional Lager for the 7th Seattle Beer Week. That is the short answer. But still, a brewery from outside Seattle brewing the Seattle Beer Week Beer? Why?

Class of 96…
Silver City Brewery is the oldest Washington Brewery west of Seattle. The nineties produced one of the early swells in the craft beer renaissance. Silver City started in ‘96, the same year as Scuttlebutt, Port Townsend and Elysian, to name a few. Brothers and restaurateurs Scott and Steve Houmes from Eugene, Oregon, who had made the Kitsap Peninsula their home, wanted to create a place that was akin to their brewpub experiences back home in Oregon. Taking inspiration from great local breweries of the time (such as Thomas Kemper, Pyramid and Widmer) they built the showcase brewpub in Silverdale, the central hub of the county. Taking further inspiration from their peers, they reached out to, then Thomas Kemper Head Brewer, Don Spencer to come on board. Fast forward to 2015, now with two locations, the restaurant in Silverdale and the Brewery & Taproom in Bremerton, Silver City is still exclusively family owned by the Houmes’ and Don is still brewing and designing the award winning beers. So, why Silver City? Besides that “they make great lagers”?  In a word; history.

What is a Silver City?
For most in the Puget Sound, when you look west at the Olympic Mountains you’re looking right at the “Silver City”. The convergence point right before you jump off into the wilderness of the Olympic National Forest on your way to the Pacific Ocean, resting between the edge of the Puget Sound and the base of the Olympic Mountains, rests Silver City. This Urban-Suburban experience is a sweet brewer’s mash of Seattle city life and breathtaking outdoor adventure, all within ones reach. Beer, well made, brings the people of the “Silver City” together in celebration of having it all.

Silver City Brewery’s Seattle Beer Week Lager Sieben Brau, makes its debut in 12oz cans in April & on tap on May 7th the kick-off of Seattle Beer Week 2015.
