I just got to try a superb new beer by Fish Brewing Company – Starfish Imperial Red Ale. Tony Powell has brewed a wonderful rendition of this style.  After chatting with Tony he recognizes that, “Most would say that an Imperial Red should be at 9% or more ABV and this brew sits at 7.5%.” He stands by this recipe and alcohol amount, since a few years ago 7.5% was considered a standard Imperial.

BrewDad Tasting Notes:
Color: Reddish Amber in color, clear with a thin beige head.
Aroma: Big hops with roast malt in the nose
Flavor: This was big in hops bitterness, caramel, nutty and piney/citrus flavors.
Palate: Dry finish with a smooth bitter hops flavor.
Overall: The dry citrus/piney bitter finish made this a very tasty brew.  Liked the drink-ability of the beer.  Easy drinking Imperial red Ale.

From Fish Brewing Company Web Site – Born in Head Brewer Tony Powell’s home brewery, this West Coast Style Imperial Red Ale is a hearty celebration of the brewing art. Almost welcoming you, four hops impart floral, citrus and sprucy Northwest notes to open the festivities. Then, seven malts and flaked barley dance happily across your palate. In the finish Starfish waves a crisply fond farewell. Convivially forthright without cloying agendas, Starfish is like time well spent with your future best friend.
