On a long relaxing weekend I drove to Seattle then took a ferry to Bainbridge Island and after I rented a bicycle I was off to Bainbridge Brewery. Upon which I saw Head Brewer Russell Everett, outside getting a tan and holding Margaritas I knew this would be a great interview. So here is what Russel had to say.
71. What was your first beer you ever drank?
There’s a photo of me in a cute little tuxedo at a wedding downing a Budweiser when I was three. So I guess that’s the earliest that there’s photographic evidence of.
82. What was your first Craft Beer you ever had and what did you think?
No idea. Probably a Red Hook. My dad had some stock in Aviator Ales back in the mid-nineties. (Some of you might remember how well that went…) So maybe one of those?
3. How did you get start in brewing? Homebrewer? Etc??? What was the first batch you ever made?
My girlfriend bought my college roomate and I a Mr. Beer kit, because I was under 21 and they wouldn’t sell it to me. We made terrible, terrible beer in our little U-district basement apartment. My roommate gave up. But a year later I went to Bob’s and got some good equipment and knowhow. Fifteen years later my wife still regrets making that purchase…
4-1. What is your favorite beer you have ever made? And why?
I am pretty happy with a Chanterelle Belgian Blonde I brewed in 2010 or so. Won Best in Show in the Cascade Cup with that one.
5c. If you had to live for the rest of your life with only drinking one beer and not one of your own. Who and what beer/brewery?
Pyramid – Snowcap
6d-1. What is your favorite beer style?
Any kind of lager. Lagers are hard.
67. What is your favorite color?
Black.
998. Favorite sport and team?
Not a big sportsball fan… Archery is more my thing, used to be the head of UW’s Archery Club. So maybe team USA?
9. What is your ultimate session beer?
I’ve got a little 3.7% Dark Mild I brew sometimes when I want to have eight of something.
1. A) What music do love to listen to while brewing?
Lots of different things, most of which doesn’t get any radio play. Indie stuff, weird techno, grunge metal, one time we listened to the same 15 second loop of Daft Punk’s Get Lucky for six and a half hours straight.
420. What is the craziest ingredient you have added while brewing?
Your call: Squid ink? Cool Ranch Doritos? Mountain Dew? Katsuobushi, konbu seaweed and shiitake mushrooms? Ramen noodles and favor packets? Sake rice and koji? Vital Wheat Gluten? Fresh Turmeric, local sauerkraut and yogurt? Gelled Stout Noodles, cilantro, thai-spice simple syrup and sriracha?
24. Favorite hop(s)
I’m a fan of Sterling – very floral, perfumy. Saaz on sterioids. I hate Simcoe with a passion. It has never entered the brewery. Smells like a litterbox.
13. What is your go to liquor?
Usually a Manhattan with Bainbridge Organic Distiller’s Wheat Whiskey. And the good Luxardo cherries.
77. Favorite Movie(s)
Master and Commander. For some reason I find the sound of ships’ cannon fire very soothing.
15. What is your favorite movie Quote?
Mac: But our shenanigans are cheeky and fun!
Thorny: Yeah, and his shenanigans are cruel and tragic.
Foster: [after a pause] Which… makes them not really shenanigans at all.
Mac: [in a silly voice] Evil shenanigans!

1. Are you on twitter (@Twitter name) what is your favorite twitter #hashtag?
We have one for the brewery. I forgot the password long ago. Hope it hasn’t been hacked and just retweets Trump all day or something…
17. Morning person or Night person?
Neither
44.What is your favorite Hot sauce?
Sirracha. Cock Sauce FTW!
17. If you could ask me BrewDad one question what would it be?
Do you think there is such a thing as The Best Beer?
BrewDad – I think there can be the best beer for an event. But overall it all depends on each person and there feelings for that particular time. Your mood, the weather and over all the flavor profiles that “One” prefers. So yes but it is a each individuals preference.
Thank you Russell, and keep on brewing great beer.
