Zwanze DayFrom Dr Fermento: Mark your calendar for the September 19th Zwanze Day at Anchorage Brewing Company. What’s Zwanze Day? Hell, what’s a Zwanze, for that matter?

Zwanze, loosely translated in Flemish means “a joke, or to kid,” but for Cantillon, it’s no joke because every year since 2008, Cantillon has been producing a special experimental beer for this day. Starting in 2011, Cantillon reached out to select breweries world wide and shipped them the year’s result, and this year Anchorage Brewing Company is proud to be part of the international toast at 11 am at the brewery.

If you haven’t noticed, we don’t get much Cantillon beer up here and when it does show up in bottles, it’s instantly snatched up by our more discriminating beer lovers. You may not have noticed that Cantillon has never been on tap up here anywhere, except for a top secret private keg that Anchorage Brewing’s Gabe Fletcher managed to smuggle in and which we drank with abandon.

History’s in the making. Not only will this year’s Zwanze beer be on tap at Anchorage Brewing (a wild stout: the first dark beer in Cantillon’s founding in 1900) can you wrap your lips around the likes of Cantillon’s Kriek, Grand Cru, Rose de Gambrinus, and Iris on tap? How about pours of Vignaronne, Cuvee St-Gilloise, and Grand Cru Bruoscella?

Fair warning! There are only 20 liters of the Zwanze Wild Stout being poured, and 30 liters of the other four draught selections. Only a case each of the bottled stuff came in too. Translation? Be in line at the brewery early on Saturday, September 19th before the 11 am pour and toast!
