I heard a few weeks back Widmer Brothers Brewing was brewing a gluten free beer.  Then this past week with the launch and beer store shelves being stocked.  I see these new bottles with some odd looking labels and me being a beer geek I have to check the label out. I I see a light Widmer marking on the side of the bottle was stil confused.  Oh how soon I forget Widmer was doing something new.  I asked the store clerk she tells me it is the new “Gluten Free” I was like oh that’s right.   Interesting I looked the bottle over never finding “Gluten Free” on the bottle not the packaging.  So then it was on I need to find out more.  Not that I am in need of beer to be gluten free.  But, I know lots of people who do and I wonder is this really gluten free.

According to the website Omissionbeer.com this is what I found out.
“Omission is the first craft beer brand in the United States focused exclusively on brewing great tasting craft beers with traditional beer ingredients, including malted barley, specially crafted to remove gluten. Brewed by Widmer Brothers Brewing in Portland,Oregon, gluten levels in Omission beers are reduced through a proprietary process and tested by an independent lab using the R5 Competitive ELISA.”

Each batch is tested and on the website you can use the code on your beer to find the test results to see your brew has been gluten removed to safe levels.  I say that again it is not gluten free it is gluten removed to safe levels.  Not that I know what levels are safe for my friends that are in need of being gluten free – but I am guessing they – Widmer have done so.  I will be interested in seeing what the reception is going to be amongst the gluten free community.  Anyone out there in the gluten free community can tell me how is this brew is being received I love to hear.  More news to come soon on this very interesting NEW brew.
