SAMUEL ADAMS® Downtime Pilsner
Samuel Adams Downtime Pilsner is a new, limited release brew. It’s our take on one of the most popular beer styles worldwide – the classic pilsner. For this German Pilsner recipe, we wanted to brew a light-bodied beer that showcases both heritage Noble Hops and new hop varieties all grown in the original hop gardens of Bavaria.
Noble hops are the original hop varieties grown in the world’s oldest hop growing region of Bavaria, Germany. These hops are prized for their delicate yet distinctive flavors. For our German Pilsner we used two of these original Noble hops, Hallertau Mittelfrueh and Hersbrucker, to create a spicy, floral character.
To add a layer of complexity to the classic pilsner style, we also experimented with new hop varieties, Herkules and Mandarina. This is the first brew we’ve ever released using these hops. These hops create fruit, citrus, and tangerine notes as well as hints of black pepper and melon. These classic and new German hop varieties coupled with a light biscuit malt character create a golden pilsner with a crisp finish and a touch of dryness.
