San Diego and Hawaii-based brewing powerhouses bridge the Pacific.  Annual collaboration beer being brewed to raise money for breast cancer programs and research.

This press release was issued last month by Coronado Brewing Co.  A total of 40 barrels of Hibiscus IPA was produced and has been distributed in Southern California, Arizona and Hawaii.  Product is expected to arrive in Hawaii this last week of November (mainland inventory is almost sold out!)

San Diego,California- October 2012 –  San Diego-based Coronado Brewing Company has recently collaborated with Hawaii’s Maui Brewing Co.  in a recipe to support  breast cancer research organizations. Dubbed Hibiscus IPA, it is scheduled to hit shelves in October 2012 in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Compliments of its’ namesake hibiscus, and a combination of Centennial, Chinook and Nugget hops, it is an appropriately pink, sessionable IPA, coming in at 4.9%ABV. A refreshingly crisp beer, it exhibits pronounced floral notes amidst a hint of balanced bitters.

The genesis for the collaboration came when Coronado Brewing Company President Rick Chapman and contemporary, Maui Brewing Co. owner Garrett Marrero crossed paths during Arizona Beer Week and developed the idea for the charitable brew.

Collaborating are head brewers Kim Lutz of Maui and Coronado Brewing Company’s Dan Jensen. 20-barrel batches of Hibiscus IPA are being produced at Coronado Brewing Company’s flagship brewpub on Coronado Island, where it will be on tap and packaged in 22-ounce bottles to be distributed in markets where both brewing companies’ beers are available, as well as several draught accounts in San Diego and Maui.

A portion of proceeds from sales will be donated to Beer 4 Boobs, a Susan G. Komen 3-Day walking team founded in 2008 and headquartered at San Diego-based, yeast production company, White Labs, donor of the yeast used to brew Hibiscus IPA.

Building on their established tradition of supporting the fight against breast cancer, Coronado Brewing Company plans to turn production of Hibiscus IPA into an annual offering. In 2013, the beer will be produced and packaged at the Maui Brewing Co. facility. From there, production will alternate between the two islands.
