Elysian Brewing Press Release -

AVATAR JASMINE IPA IS BACK, and in a new package. After a break of several months, while we waited for the new crop of jasmine to arrive from China, one of the most interesting beers in America will be reentering the market in both 22-oz. bottles and on draft. The bottles will have a new label as well, with a more stylized version of the familiar-and elusive-jasmine blossoms used to make the beer.

A great beer is more than the sum of its parts, even when the ingredients, the inspiration and the execution are everything they should be. It was difficult to resist the temptation to use other, more available sources of jasmine, but the wait for the good stuff was worth it. Jumping off from a traditional West Coast IPA, the flavor and aroma of jasmine flowers combine with a somewhat mellower hop finish to create a bridge between the worlds of East and Northwest.

Avatar was first inspired by a fanciful connection during a GABF judging session by one of head brewer Dick Cantwell’s fellow judges, who remarked that one of the IPAs on the table reminded him of jasmine tea. The evocation of jasmine in that beer’s hop character wasn’t enough for it to go on to the next round, but right out of the gate, some years later (2005, to be exact) Avatar medaled at GABF in the Herb and Spice category. Three years later it took top honors in the same category at the World Beer Cup. Draft Magazine also named it one 2010′s top 25 beers, awarding it a score of 98.

Look for Avatar in select draft accounts and on the shelves of your favorite local grocery. It’s a new incarnation of IPA, back and as good as it’s ever been.

CHEERS!
Dick Cantwell

Brewery invites you to meet the Brewer and the Beer and Support Hospice of the Gorge

Hood River,Oregon– This month Full Sail Brewing will release a new beer in their Brewer’s Share Experimental line up: “Dan’s Satin Stout” crafted by Assistant Operations Manager Dan Nakamura. Intrigued by the complexity of dark beer, Dan brewed a sweet, dark stout with a very smooth, satiny finish.

Dan’s Satin Stout is a creamy, dark beer with a soft and smooth finish and is complemented with the subtly sweet notes of chocolate and a hint of honey. A blend of pale,Munich, caramel, chocolate malt, and roast barley give Satin Stout its deep darkness and complex palate.Willamette and Mt.Hood hops provide just enough bitter to balance the sweet malitness; their slightly spicy aromas complement the floral notes from the addition of wildflower honey. Nitrogen conditioning is the final finishing touch providing a luscious satiny smoothness. 5.2%ABV 36 IBU

“I feel so fortunate to have a job I love in the place I grew up. I started my career at Full Sail as a keg washer over 21 years ago and have had the opportunity to move through many jobs at the brewery. In the process I have really gained a passion for great beer and a deep respect for the brewing art. When the opportunity to brew my own beer came up, I jumped at the chance to follow a long line of very talented Full Sail brewers. I sincerely hope that you enjoy this beer as much as I enjoyed brewing it. Cheers!” said Dan Nakamura.

Russian River Brewing sends out a limited amount of kegs of this special brew that makes some go absolutely nuts. These people will stop at nothing to get themselves some fresh Pliny the Younger. They will call distributors to find out they when are delivering and where. They will then hound bars and pubs until there is a glimmer of hope and when this elixir is being poured. They will then bribe, cajole and flirt with bartenders and be relentless in this ultimate pursuit of drinking the Younger. I have heard and seen it all. 4 years ago when I tried my first pint and yes back then it was a pint of the triple hopped IPA. Now your lucky if it is 8oz pour usually even less. And that is a 8-10 dollar pour depending on the bar. They (Bars) are trying to get as much out as they can. I have seen bars that never say a word they just put the brew on and let the faithful find it and enjoy. Some haveRussianRivernights and pour for the masses until empty which is usually as fast as they can tap and pour – 30 minutes by my timing. There have been some bars/pubs that have just surprised the masses came out with 100 taster glasses filled with the brew and give it away. Now it is gone no more calls, no more customers seeking to sneak a peak in the keg room. No more going nuts for a dram of the tasty triple IPA. Oh sure some will say by me writing this I am fanning the flames. Well I am here to tell you “Fan away.” It is awesome to see the passion thatRussianRiverputs into their beers and the fun that comes from others seeking to find this brew. The stories of those who found this brew in a special bar they never knew. Some say the beer is not that good well I will let you be the judge. So here’s to that mid-winter fun we call Pliny the Younger time.

Triple India Pale Ale

Pliny the Younger, the man, was Pliny the Elder’s nephew and adopted son. They lived nearly 2,000 years ago! Pliny the Elder is our Double IPA, so we felt it was fitting to name our Triple IPA after his son. It is almost a true Triple IPA with triple the amount of hops as a regular I.P.A. That said, it is extremely difficult, time and space consuming, and very expensive to make. And that is why we don’t make it more often! This beer is very full-bodied with tons of hop character in the nose and throughout. It is also deceptively well-balanced and smooth.

Availability
Elysian Brewing Company is planning to make brewing life a little more challenging by kicking off its IPA Specialty Series in February of 2012 with Idiot Sauvin, an IPA both fiercely fruity and floral, made with New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. The beer has appeared before only at Elysian’s pubs, and will be issued in both 22 oz bottles and draft.

Then in June will come Prometheus, an aggressively aromatic blend of Northwest classic Chinook, Cascade, Centennial and Amarillo hops fondly familiar to Elysian regulars.

Rounding out the year will be Valhalla, a reddish fall-into-holiday IPA using Sorachi Ace and Citra hops, scheduled for release in October. Too many IPAs? Bah, humbug!
